Some of us are not aware that this possibility exists within us, while others live their lives feeling depleted, caught in cycles of low self worth, and bound by their past. 

Through exploration, curiosity and mindful observing we can slowly take the steps towards creating a stronger foundation on which to heal, transform and grow. Through this we can begin to embrace the freedom to truly experience  joy, abundance and a deeper sense of personal fulfilment.

MENTALIZATION BASED THERAPY

Mentalization begins in the heart. It is the meticulous moment to moment monitoring of relationships

Mentalizing is a skill that we innately use on an everyday basis to help us connect with others within our social world. It is an insightful understanding of our own thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions while at the same time allowing us to have a good sense of what is going on for others. 


As human beings we are constantly on some level attempting to tune into the world around us. We are consciously and unconsciously trying to make sense of others, whether it be through facial expressions, tone of voice or behaviour. This social skill helps us to identify what or who is safe and what is not. It is the foundation on which we build human relationships.

For some of us mentalizing can become difficult in certain situations. For those of us  who have lacked secure attachments growing up or who have suffered trauma in our earlier years our capacity to mentalize can be limited. 

We may feel emotionally distressed more often and struggle to regulate our emotions. We can be easily triggered on an unconscious level by people and situations which may result in us feeling angry and hurt and not know why.


 This can be very confusing and cause us to avoid situations or react in ways that we may later regret. Feelings of distrust and being misunderstood can arise and lead us to seek out dysfunctional coping strategies in an attempt to calm ourselves down to make us feel better. Psychological/physical issues may develop as a result such as depression, anxiety, addiction and disordered eating.


 Over time we may have learned to disconnect from ourselves and those around us in attempt to keep ourselves safe, as trying to make sense of ourselves and others proves too difficult.

MBT is an evidence based psychodynamic therapy, initially designed by Bateman and Fonagy to treat individuals suffering from Emotionally Unstable personality disorder. The concept of mentalizing draws its root from early attachment theory.

It is now being more widely used to treat :


  • Eating disorders
  • Addiction
  • Depression
  • Trauma 


It's aim is to improve an individuals capacity to mentalize allowing them to develop a much deeper 

understanding of themselves and others.


 By focussing on  difficult current life situations one will experience the opportunity to explore their own thoughts, emotions and behaviours  while considering what might be going on for the other. 

As our capacity to mentalize develops we can reflect on our own behaviour and have the skill to understand why others behave the way they do.This allows us to relate to ourselves and others in a more compassionate and empathic manner which over time allows us to develop more stable and meaningful relationships with  others in our lives.

Emotional freedom techniques


"Emotional Freedom Technique is the “Perfect bridge between cutting edge Western medicine and ancient healing practices from the East”

Emotional freedom Techniques otherwise known as EFT or Tapping is an alternative treatment for physical pain and emotional distress. 


Similar to acupuncture and acupressure, its principles are rooted in ancient Eastern meridian energy systems. When the bodies natural flow of energy becomes blocked or disrupted through trauma, stress or illness our bodily systems can fall out of balance often resulting in physical pain and/or  mental and emotional issues such as low mood, fearfulness, anxiety, disordered eating and addiction.

 

Instead of using pressure or using needles to stimulate the meridian pathways it simply involves the tapping of specific meridian points on the head, face and upper body while focussing on a psychological issue. 

 It is a safe and non invasive treatment and can be used on both adults and children and can be adapted to most situations. EFT with children can be fun and imaginative.


It is through this approach we are able to get to the root or foundation of the problem and discharge the unwanted emotion stuck in the body while reorganizing the electrochemical signals that are sent to the brain.  Through this process we can then begin to rewire and re programme how the brain and the body act or react to various stimuli and triggers that may normally have caused us mental/emotional distress or unwanted memories.


Research has also shown that that tapping reduces the production of cortisol (stress hormone) which is produced when we are stressed, frightened or anxious. 

This was helpful for our ancestors when as humans we needed to fight and flee when necessary in order to keep us safe. In modern day life however this ancient part of our brain tends not to know the difference between being chased by a tiger, attending a job interview or going out on a first date!

 If our bodies are constantly switched on to the fight, flight or freeze setting, chances are that cortisol is being produced more than it should be causing havoc to our mind/body. If produced excessively over a long period of time, we can be faced with a number of issues causing impairment to our sleep, digestive, heart, immune systems and sexual dysfunction.


EFT can be used to treat:

 

  • Symptoms of low mood and anxiety
  • Physical Pain
  • Addictions
  • Insomnia
  • Emotional eating/weight issues
  • Phobias
  • Performance anxiety
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Overcome negative thinking
  • Trauma


 It is not  necessary for you to know what is causing the difficulties for EFT to work, nor do you have to relive distressing events to work on reducing the effects of the root cause.

Recent research shows that just thinking positively about something may not be enough. The reason being that our sub conscious minds are continually running old programmes downloaded from our childhoods. How many of us want to move forward in life, travel somewhere on a plane, start a new buisiness, a new relationship or even apply for a new job but feel stuck and can’t seem to take that step required to get there.
